Lonsdale Road was a refurbishment project of a Victorian property in Notting Hill, London. The challenge in this 50sqm top floor flat was to work to the client’s brief of two bedrooms and two bathrooms without creating a compartmentalised space with small rooms and little natural light. The concept was about maximising storage space and hiding clutter to retain the illusion of space. The client wanted something clean and minimal so the colour scheme was kept crisp and simple with white walls in the lounge, soft grey walls in the bedrooms and light wood floors throughout from Italian supplier Listone Giordano. All the furniture is the Client’s own.

The ceilings reached only 200cm in most rooms so in order to gain a better ceiling height throughout, use was made of the pitched roof to achieve 300cm at the highest point in the living room. This added height gives the living room a more open feel and the two Velux skylights bring in more light, creating the impression of more space.

The bedrooms were another challenge in creating enough storage space in less than 10sqm and only 200cm room height without cluttering the space or creating a claustrophobic atmosphere. Custom in-built wardrobes were fitted in both bedrooms. These were constructed on site by our team of joiners and finished with mirrored fronts. The two middle wardrobe doors in each bedroom are not storage space, but in fact the disguised entrance to the bathrooms.

The bathrooms are both finished in ceramic tiles in light colours to continue the soft colour scheme throughout the flat. Light tunnels were fitted in the windowless bathrooms and LED-lit niches were in-built above the cistern and in the shower cubicles to provide further storage space.

The kitchen was imported from Italy from our kitchen supplier Minimal Cucine and finished in gloss white with a white quartz counter top. In the 6sqm space containing the kitchen, we were able to fit a full height fridge-freezer, standard sized dishwasher, washer-dryer, wine cooler, built in microwave, induction hob and oven as well as the boiler and an ample amount of storage space. The kitchen was especially successful considering the extremely small size of the property and the challenges involved in building with such a low room height.
